Today, in the spirit of helping you get your daily dose of omega-3’s, we want to point your attention to the flax seed muffin.
Recall that in order to derive full benefit from flax seeds, they must be ground prior to ingestion. By milling/grinding flax seeds, the human digestive track can then absorb the alpha linolenic acid and lignans they contain.
Lignans are fibre-like compounds, that provide antioxidant protection, as well as function as phytoestrogens. Phytoestrongens function as weak or moderate estrogens when consumed by humans, and may protect us against the the harmful effects of excess estrogens.
And one thing we are starting to realize is that body fat cells themselves secret estrogen, so opting for foods that help us better regulate whole-body estrogen levels is probably a good move.
